What happens if you travel without ETIAS after Q4 2027?

Once ETIAS becomes mandatory (expected ~Q4 2027), traveling without it will have serious consequences:

✈️

Airlines will deny boarding

Airlines are legally required to verify ETIAS before allowing you on a flight to the Schengen Area.

🚫

Border agents will refuse entry

Even if you arrive at a Schengen border, you will be turned away without a valid ETIAS.

💸

No refund on flights or hotels

Airlines and hotels are not obligated to refund bookings if you are denied travel due to missing authorization.

⚠️

Previous travel may be impacted

Being denied entry can create a record that complicates future visa and travel authorization applications.

Apply for ETIAS as soon as the system launches. The 20 fee is a fraction of the cost of a ruined trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ETIAS a visa?

No. ETIAS is a travel authorization, similar to the US ESTA. It is for citizens of visa-exempt countries who currently enter the Schengen Area without any pre-authorization. It does not replace visas for citizens of countries that require them.

When does ETIAS become mandatory?

ETIAS is expected to launch in Q4 2026 (October-December). There will be a transition period of approximately one year where it is available but not mandatory. By approximately Q4 2027, it will be strictly enforced.

What happens if my ETIAS is denied?

If denied, you will receive an explanation and can appeal the decision or reapply. About 5% of applications are expected to require additional manual review. Denial does not affect your ability to apply for a full Schengen visa.

Can I travel to multiple Schengen countries with one ETIAS?

Yes. One ETIAS authorization covers all 30 Schengen Area countries. There is no need to apply separately for each country.

Do children need ETIAS?

Yes, all travelers regardless of age need an ETIAS authorization. However, applicants under 18 and over 70 are exempt from the €20 fee.

What if my passport expires before my ETIAS?

ETIAS is linked to your passport. If your passport expires, your ETIAS becomes invalid. You will need to apply for a new ETIAS with your new passport.

Does ETIAS cover the UK?

No. The UK is not part of the Schengen Area. To visit the UK, you need a separate UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). If visiting both, you need both authorizations.
